    This one Highland parish alone, "which once had a population of 2, souls, and received only eleven pounds per annum from public (church) funds for the support of the poor, expends now under the Poor Law upwards of /. annually, with a population diminished by one-half.".   There were also a few other very extensive Highland parishes, but the average size of Highland parishes was much less than that. All this topographical information is freely available in published sources and on the internet; but to some historians the words in a document, especially a venerable one, have a kind of sanctity, and cannot be gainsaid.
